Why a confidential counselor association?

A confidential counselor is important for guaranteeing social safety within an association. In an association, people come together, often in their spare time, to spend time on a shared passion or common goal. An association is an organisation with members, often young and old. Due to the nature of the organisation, it is important to work on a safe association culture, both preventively and by making confidential counsellors available should undesirable behaviour situations or even integrity violations such as theft or fraud occur.

Comply with legislation

What does an external confidential counselor do within the association?

Create a external confidential counsellor within an association ensures that members can speak to a confidential contact person in the event of (suspected) intimidation, bullying and aggression, discrimination and sexual misconduct. An external confidential counselor can also provide the board with solicited and unsolicited advice and provides information and advice to members about socially (un)desirable behaviour. The timely deployment of an external confidential counselor can ensure the de-escalation of situations and the prevention of unwanted behaviour.

Risks of inappropriate behaviour in associations

Every association involves a risk of undesirable behaviour, the consequences of which can be very serious. Examples include undesirable behaviour by supervisors or coaches with young members - such as sexual misconduct or intimidation to improve sports performance.

Club life often takes place in the members' free time, which means that alcohol use can also increase the risk of unwanted behaviour. And in student associations, there is a risk of undesirable behaviour, especially during hazing.

Hire a confidential counselor for an association

To ensure a socially safe association culture, it is important to take measures, both preventatively and by appointing a confidential counselor. Trustlr helps associations with the implementation of the confidential counselor within the association and we have various tools to increase the visibility of the confidential counselor within the association.

Our external confidential counsellors are also certified by the National Association of Confidential Counsellors (LVV) and can always be deployed in the event of (suspected) unwanted inappropriate behaviour or integrity violations. Trustlr and our external confidential counsellors can be easily deployed in addition to any internal confidential counsellors, because the combination provides more freedom of choice. The internal confidential counsellor has more organisational sensitivity, while the external confidential counsellor is more independent and feels more anonymous and normally has more experience. The House of Representatives adopted the Groen Links initiative law in 2023. This law is now being discussed by the Senate. Because 95% of all bills that pass the House of Representatives are also adopted in the Senate, it seems likely that an external confidential counsellor will soon become mandatory for companies with more than 10 employees.

We work on prevention and intervention. At best, our external confidential counsellors only help you proactively improve your work culture. Nevertheless, if necessary, we help to discuss unwanted behaviour and integrity violations and work together on de-escalation.

Undesirable behaviour involves bullying, discrimination, intimidation and sexual intimidation. Integrity issues are matters such as theft, fraud, conflicts of interest, corruption and other forms of abuse of power that harm the organisation or society.

The three most important tasks of our confidential counsellors are to provide initial support, guidance and advice to employees, to provide information, and to provide solicited and unsolicited advice to the top of an organisation.

In addition, Trustlr offers additional preventive services through our e-learning courses via the Trustlr platform.

Every employer is obliged to implement a policy on psychosocial workload. One of the ways in which the Dutch Labor Inspectorate (the Arbo Inspection) checks this is by looking at the presence of a number of matters that you have arranged directly with Trustlr, such as making a confidential counsellor available and providing information about inappropriate behaviour. The presence of a code of conduct and a complaints procedure is also checked and Trustlr can arrange both for you.

Sounds nice: 'our confidential counsellors help you save costs,' but how does that work? In the Netherlands, 1,2 million people annually experience unwanted behaviour in the workplace, and of the 6 billion euros in work-related absenteeism costs, 64% is caused by psychosocial work strain. Because Trustlr's services proactively contribute to a safer work culture, we often see a decrease in work-related absenteeism costs. In addition, the Trustlr platform helps us to reduce our billable hours, meaning that our service quickly yields more than you invest in it.

We have an internal confidential counsellor and an external confidential counsellor from Trustlr. And this combination of freedom of choice from the employees they want to address (internal or external) and a good sparring partner for the internal confidential counsellor works very well for us.

We appreciate Trustlr because it helps us easily comply with laws and regulations. As a small company, we cannot appoint an internal confidential counsellor. With Trustlr we offer colleagues access to information, education and advice, which ensures a safe working environment.
